Chelsea suffered a surprise defeat at home to Southampton 1-2 on Tuesday evening, in the fifth round of the English Premier League.
Southampton's goals were scored by Romeo Lafia (28) and Adam Armstrong (45+1), while Raheem Sterling scored Chelsea's only goal (23).
This is Chelsea's second loss since the beginning of the season, with one draw and two wins, to freeze its balance at 7 points in ninth place, the same balance that Southampton holds, to finish in eighth place.
Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel relied on the 4-4-2 method, where Thiago Silva stood alongside Calido Coulibaly deep in the back line, with the support of full-backs Cesar Azpilicueta and Marc Cucurea, and Jorginho played the role of the center player, and Mason Montt moved in front of him, while the wings were filled Hakim Ziyech and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, while Kai Havertz collaborated with Raheem Sterling at the front line.
On the other hand, Southampton coach Ralph Hasenhuttl resorted to the 4-2-3-1 method, with the back line of Kyle Walker Peters, Armel Bella Kochap, Muhammed Salisu and Romain Peraud, and James Ward Bruce exchanged roles with Romeo Lafia in the middle of the field, while The trio of Adam Armstrong, Ibrahima Diallo and Mohamed El-Younessi moved behind striker Che Adams.
The first shot on the two goals came in the fourth minute through Southampton, when Armstrong shoved the ball on his chest, before passing to Al-Youssi, who fired an unfocused ball that goalkeeper Edward Mendy did not find difficult to control.
Jorginho penetrated Southampton's defense with a through pass, which Mont followed by passing to Sterling, and the latter got rid of Bella Kochap before he shot in the goalkeeper Pazono's place in the 14th minute.
Pazono easily controlled Ziyech's weak shot after a pass from Mont in the 16th minute, and Loftus-Cheek set off a counter-attack to pass to Sterling, who chose to advance the ball instead of passing it to the motivated Mont, to be cut by the defense in front of him in the 22nd minute.
Chelsea opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, when Mont exchanged the ball with Havertz, before sending it into the penalty area, but Peraud cut it to reach Sterling, who controlled it and shot into the net.
Peraud hit a ball that rebounded from Thiago Silva in the 25th minute, before Southampton managed to equalize 28, when Haveritz cut a corner kick to reach Lafia, who shot hard from outside the penalty area, to the left of goalkeeper Mendy.
Armstrong got the ball on the left side, before hitting a weak ball that Mendy had no difficulty in stopping in the 36th minute.
In the added time of the first half, Peraoud sent a cross into the penalty area, which Armstrong controlled with a touch before he shot it to bounce from Coulibaly into the goal.
Mateo Kovacic entered instead of Loftus-Cheek between the two halves, and Southampton continued to press in the second half, when Ward Bruce failed to reach Proud's pass, to be controlled by Al-Younissi and hit the back and Correa, who rebounded the ball to him, to make it easy for goalkeeper Mendy in the 52nd minute.
Haveritz's header passed over Southampton's goal, after a cross from Azpilicueta in the 66th minute, after which Armando Bruja, Christian Pulisic and Ben Chilwell entered the place of Azpilicueta, Haveritz and Jorginho.
Southampton had the opportunity to advance their lead with a third goal in the 74th minute, but Thiago Silva skillfully cleared the ball before it crossed the goal line, after Saliso's header.
Sterling raised a cross from the left, substitute Brocha rose to it and followed it with his head, but goalkeeper Pazono was on the lookout for it in the 82nd minute.
